In general, the foundation offers three ways of how your gift can support the Department: projects, professorships, and scholarships.

Benefit from our Legacy Circle

UZH main building

Take part in an annual exchange of knowledge and research findings, receive our magazine with information on our research projects and results, and be our guest at public lectures with (future) Nobel Prize winners and important opinion leaders and decision makers from science and industry.

By including the Excellence Foundation Zurich as a beneficiary in your will or life insurance policy, you become a member of the Legacy Circle.

Please let us know of your intentions. We look forward to meeting you!

Your last will and testament

Would you like to include the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich in your will?

If you wish to include the University Zurich’s Department of Economics in your will, please name the Excellence Foundation Zurich as the beneficiary of your testamentary disposition. In this way, you can ensure that your legacy or inheritance will benefit the Department of Economics.

The Excellence Foundation Zurich is the foundation of the Department. It is tax-exempt and religiously and politically neutral. Its founder is Prof. Ernst Fehr, who established the foundation in 2011 with the objective of creating a Center of Excellence in Economics at the University of Zurich in order to provide ideal conditions for cutting edge interdisciplinary research.

Your legacy can be earmarked for a specific project of your choice or it can be used by the Excellence Foundation for a non-earmarked purpose. It is also possible to establish personal name or theme funds within the Excellence Foundation.

What can a legacy or inheritance achieve?

laughing children in Malawi

An example: In developing countries like Malawi, children are trapped in a vicious circle from birth onwards that makes it difficult for them to escape poverty and underdevelopment. This vicious circle can only be broken if the right interventions are made for each child at the right time. In an ongoing project, the pilot phase of which was financed by a legacy from Paul Karrer, researchers at the Center for Child Well-being and Development are collecting data on biomarkers of children and on the social contacts of parents and children. It is the first project to use artificial intelligence to enable real-time program evaluation and personalization across multiple dimensions of child development in poor countries.
